Maths

Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy. Mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world and the ability to reason mathematically. At Bishops Down, we use Teaching for Mastery to learn Mathematics as it has been proven to be the most effective approach. It prioritises deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and methods. We utilise the White Rose Maths curriculum for each year, which is broken down into carefully planned sequential units that build upon each other.

We are a Teaching for Mastery school and work closely with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and its linked local Kent and Medway Maths Hub, this is facilitated by our new Maths leader who is a NCETM Primary Mastery Specialist.

Teachers aim to use interactive teaching that includes: precise ‘mathematical talk’ (vocabulary and stem sentences), concrete resources, pictorial representations and the teaching of efficient informal and written methods of calculations and to keep the whole class together as much as possible. We  understand that children need rapid accurate recall of the key in order to access all the fluency, reasoning and problem solving tasks expected. They develop this understanding via the main Maths sessions and four weekly NCETM Mastering Number sessions in Reception, year one, year two and in year 3 (the latter is for consolidation) and by regular whole class targeted fluency sessions in key stage two.

There are lots of ways to practise the maths core skills, such as adding and subtracting prices when you are out shopping, reciting your times-tables or playing games with dice or cards. There are also other resources to help develop your maths skills (whatever your age) and we have added some ideas below.
